Programmer

The Vehicle Intelligence & Transportation Analysis Laboratory (VITAL) at NCGIA, UCSB, is a federally funded testbed, examining proposed standards in the emerging field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).  We beam traffic messages between mobile clients and fixed servers (or simulate those messages in the lab), and study the types and consequences of location referencing errors that arise due to map database inaccuracies.

An exciting and challenging opening exists for a programmer, starting immediately.  The candidate should be fluent in object-oriented programming and modeling using C++ in a PC environment, with strengths in street network applications (e.g. shortest path algorithms) and Web-based client-server communications.  Legacy code is in MS Visual C++ with extensive use of MFCs; may have to import, integrate or interact with Unix code.  Job requires knowledge of GIS principles, and ideally some familiarity with ArcInfo/AML and ArcView/Avenue/MapInfo.  Documentation of code, and routine system setup and administration tasks on Win95, WinNT and Unix machines may be involved.  Examples of current work are at http://www.ncgia.ucsb.edu/vital
